Often referred to as, “The Queen of Seattle Music”, Carrie Akre is a musician best known for her work with Seattle underground bands Hammerbox and Goodness. With a vocal delivery that is at once aggressive, haunting and melodic, Akre’s style of female rock-vox is comparable, yet superior, to the likes of 80s power-vixens Pat Benetar or Lita Ford, and she is one of the few women to carry that strong vocal flavour into the 1990s with the advent of grunge and the rise in popularity of alternative rock. Since Goodness disbanded in 1998, she has contributed vocals to the project band The Rockfords (which included Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready on guitar), and released two solo albums, ‘Home and ‘Invitation’, the latter the first release on her own record label, ‘My Way Records’. As of 2007, she’s currently in the studio working on her third solo release. Akre’s solo work is a change of direction, with a more stripped back and soulful approach broadening her style as a musician. Carrie Akre’s official websiteCaroline Aiken Mp3 Track Download

Oleta Adams (born May 4, 1953, Seattle, Washington) is an American soul, jazz, and gospel singer and pianist. Adams was born the daughter of a preacher and was raised with gospel music. In her youth her family moved to Yakima, Washington, which is sometimes shown as her place of birth. Adams started her career in 1980 with two self-financed albums which had limited success. In 1985, she was discovered by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, founders of the famous English pop band Tears for Fears whilst performing in a Kansas City, Missouri bar. They invited her to join their band as a singer to their next album The Seeds of Love. In 1989, the LP was released and the single “Woman In Chains” - sung as a duet by Adams and Orzabal and with Phil Collins on drums - became her real first hit. Oleta started her solo career in 1990 assisted by Orzabal who did the production. Her debut album Circle of One received much critical acclaim and she scored her biggest hit to date in 1991 with her cover of Brenda Russell’s “Get Here”. 1991 also saw Oleta contribute to the Elton John/Bernie Taupin tribute album, Two Rooms, on which appeared her version of John’s 1974 hit “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me”. Her next album Evolution was also a commercial success. Her 1995 release, Moving On, saw Oleta move more in the direction of R&B. Two years later she released the Christian themed Come Walk With Me. Adams’ smooth sumptuous contralto voice has become the vanguard in an R&B jazz segment that was largely vacant during Anita Baker’s hiatus. In 2001, Adams released her sixth album, All The Love, a return to an R&B/Adult contemporary sound. The album was re-released in 2004 in Germany with a different title I Can’t Live a Day without You.Top Track

Margie Adam is one of the pioneers of the Women’s Music movement. She was born in Lompoc, California, USA, in 1947. Ms. Adam began playing the piano at a very early age. In 1973, while attending the Sacramento Women’s Music Festival, she performed during the open mic session and so began her career as a professional musician and composer. Soon, she was involved in the Women’s Music movement, a school of music which uses the art form as a means of political and social as well as artistic expression. Her first album, Margie Adam, was promoted with a fifty city tour which concluded with a performance of her song, “We Shall Go Forth” at the National Women’s Conference in Houston. The song quickly became an anthem for the feminist movement and is now part of the Political History archives in the Smithsonian Museum. Touring through the early eighties at various concerts and fundraisers for feminist candidates and causes, she eventually took what she called a “radical’s sabbatical,” during which she enhanced her music and singing skills and also counseled people recovering from drug and alcohol dependencies. She returned to writing music in 1990 and went on a national tour in 1992 to support her new album, Another Place. In 1996 she embarked on the Three of Hearts tour with fellow pianists Liz Story and Barbara Higbie. A tour to raise awareness of the great service feminist bookstores made to the women’s community was conducted in 1998.Top Track

Barbara Acklin (28 February 1943, Oakland, California — 27 November 1998, Nebraska) was a soul singer of the 1960s and 1970s. Her biggest hit was “Love Makes a Woman” in 1968 which reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. As a teenager, she began singing in nightclubs while attending Dunbar Vocational High school. Upon graduation, she was hired as a secretary for local record label by her cousin, saxophonist Monk Higgins. Her first release was under the name Barbara Allen on his Special Agent label. Later, Higgins used Acklin as a background singer on his Chess Records sessions. In 1966, Acklin began working as a receptionist for record producer Carl Davis at Brunswick Records. Always keeping in mind her goal of becoming a recording star, she persistently asked Davis to record her. Davis said that he would, but, in the meantime, he encouraged her to keep writing songs. Cornering Brunswick Records star Jackie Wilson, Acklin had him listen to a tune that she co-wrote with David Scott (formerly of The Exciters Band). Wilson liked it and passed it on to Davis. Released September 1966, the song, “Whispers (Gettin Louder)” went to number six R&B and number 11 on the Hot 100 in the fall of 1966. The song helped re-launch his career in the late 1960s. To return the favor, Wilson helped Acklin secure a recording contract with Brunswick. Acklin’s first chart success came from “Show Me the Way to Go,” a duet with Chandler, reaching number 30 R&B in the spring of 1968. In July 1968, Acklin had a hit of her own with the extremely catchy “Love Makes a Woman,” which went to number three R&B and number 15 on the Hot 100 in August 1968. The song also won a BMI Award.Top Track
